Feminist Porn awards. Even saying that phrase seems to automatically leave a bad taste in your mouth. It tastes like boredom. Boredom and hair.
Held in Toronto, Canada, April 9th marks the fifth year of the Good For Her Feminist Porn Awards. The awards show is a celebration of those in the adult industry who make ‘sex-positive’ and ‘female-friendly’ porn. Celebration makes us think of nature and women dancing around a flag pole.
But after taking a look at the nominees we see people like Penny Flame, who we’ve always had a soft spot for, especially when she’s giving us Her Expert Guide to Rough Sex. Some of her fellow nominees are the film noir porn, Speakeasy by Real Queer Productions and Lesbian Hitchhiker from Sweetheart Video. So far so good. We’re intrigued.
According to Good For Her, in order to be nominated for a Feminist Porn Award, the video must meet at least one of the following criteria:
1) A woman had a hand in the production, writing, direction, etc. of the work.
2) It depicts genuine female pleasure
3) It expands the boundaries of sexual representation on film and challenges stereotypes that are often found in mainstream porn
Many of the films fall more into the instructional category but are written and directed by people like industry sex experts Jayme Waxman and Tristan Taormino. The awards are in the shape of butt plugs which suddenly takes the boredom right out of our mouth.
