Annie Sprinkle is one of the earliest stars of adult cinema and when we say adult cinema we really mean cinema, you know those seedy movie theaters in the scuzzy parts of town with the soiled seats, and creepy patrons. She started working at 17 years old in an adult movie theater as a ticket taker, don’t forget that back then making an adult film could get your ass thrown in jail. She then found herself romantically involved with Deep Throat director Gerard Damiano and this relationship helped spark a career and association with adult film spanning over 35 years. Annie first break break came when she filled in for an adult actress who failed to show up to the set, Annie took this opportunity and ran with it. She went on to become one of the worlds best known adult performers appearing in over 200 films both mainstream and adult. She has appeared in every male magazine, HBO and on stage with her performance sex art shows
Annie has not rested on her laurels as so many other previous adult screen legends have done. Annie has PHD in sexuality and her life and career has always about sexuality with a spiritual, political and highly artistic influences. Her work in the field of human sexuality is downright massive in terms of the number of projects she has created, exhibitions she has overseen, workshops she has presided over and speaking engagements she has been invited to. In 2005 she committed to a 7 year project entitled The Love Art Laboratory with her wife and partner Beth Stevens and in collaboration with artist Linda M. Montano. The Love Art Lab project creates a different themed wedding each year and is yet another example of Annie’s work in the exploration of human sexuality and how it manifests itself in our culture.
Annie also created the “International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers,” held annually on December 17. It was originally conceived as a memorial and vigil for victims of serial killer and total scumbag Gary Ridgway also know as the Green River Killer. Annie also does extensive work in the field of sex-positive feminism. She has also created what she calls an “Eco-sexual” movement which explores the relationship between nature and our sexuality. She is a strong advocate for ecological reform and the further “greening” of our society. She is a proponent of age appropriate sex education and she even has started a pornstar support group helmed by former screen legends such as Veronica Heart and herself. To say Annie is a busy woman would be a huge understatement. Her activism, compassion are infectious and her influence and legacy live on not merely as an adult performer but as a proactive and passionate member of the human race. Annie Sprinkle is just getting started. We couldn’t be more appreciative of all her societal efforts and her contribution to adult film. We love you Annie!
