China’s latest effort to clean up the country’s internet has resulted in the creation of one of the coolest jobs I’ve seen listed all year. A “chief porn appraiser” gets paid roughly $32,000 a year to sort through all of the porn on the internet to determine what content should be disabled. Ni hao! Where do I submit my resume?

Before we all start Google translating our cover letters into Mandarin, it should be pointed out that the requirements for this job are a little bit higher than one would think. They already have a team of five lesser qualified individuals who scan the internet for inappropriate content; all that’s needed is a ring master to keep these keyboard cowboys in check.

Cai Yifan is a 23-year-old college graduate who majored in English and learned about the job through an advertisement that appeared on a popular social media website. While he was interested in the position, he was hesitant to apply because he found the requirements to be too difficult. In addition to being knowledgeable of internet porn, applicants for this job must also be familiar with foreign languages, law, and psychology.

Apparently this job is a lot more complicated than judging a porn clip based on how rebellious it makes your boner feel.

Like most things the government decides to regulate, there is a lot of red tape and legal shit to be danced around.

Making sure porn abides by existing obscenity laws requires a lot of effort which is why a chief porn appraiser earns every penny of that salary. I’m not going to pretend I understand what those laws are, and rather that waste everyone’s time by shittily paraphrasing the Wikipedia article about censorship in china, let’s just laugh about that time they thought a rubber pussy was some kind of rare mushroom.
