Every now and then Peeperz posts an article about American Apparel and the sexy revealing ads that they use to promote their clothing. Up until this point, they have only used super skinny girls in their “erotic art” ads but a few weeks ago they decided to have a competition to find the brand’s first Plus Size model.
April Flores, who is one of my favorite BBW’s in the Adult Industry had a bit of a disappointing conversation with an American Apparel rep back in 2010. Afterward she wrote on her Facebook wall:
Had another meeting re:clothing line this am. Went to American Apparel to see how their stuff fit. No sizes bigger than 2x. When we asked the showroom rep if they ever considered making more plus sizes she condescendingly said “That’s not our demographic.” Hmm I guess they think fat people don’t wear clothes. Their loss!
Back when I first read about this happening, I was definitely offended. In case you haven’t made it over to any of the social networking websites that I am on, I’m a BBW, a chubby girl with dangerous curves and one hell of an appetite (for sex, food…whatever). The fact that the rep from American Apparel basically said that I wasn’t welcome to wear their clothing made me throw out every tshirt from American Apparel that I owned.
Nearly a year after this incident with April Flores, American Apparel has ‘graciously’ decided to have what is being called in the Plus Sized Community, one of the most awkwardly worded and offensive contests ever. The contest announcement reads, “…for those of us who need a little extra wiggle room where it counts,”
When Nancy Upton heard about the contest she got together with her friend Shannon Skloss and took a bunch of SUPER sexy pictures all involving some kind of food to submit to American Apparel. Upton explains:
..I immediately thought, based on the way it was written, “Wow, they really have zero respect for plus-sized women. They’re going to line them up like cattle and make puns about them until they’re blue in the face.” And then, as corny as it sounds, it just occurred to me that based on their “Hey, come on, fatties, we want you to play, too” tone, wouldn’t it be kind of brilliant to respond in a, “Thanks for letting me play, just let me try put down the pizza, first” similar mocking tone.
Here are some of the pics taken for the contest. You can see the full sets if you scroll through Nancy’s Tumblr account at Extrawiggleroom.tumblr.com and you can vote for Nancy’s entry in the contest with this link here on the American Apparel Website: VOTE FOR NANCY
