Oh good. CBC news reported that according to British STI specialists, Gonorrhea is showing signs of resistance to antibiotics. In case you’re wondering Gonorrhea can cause some pretty serious damage to the body including such fun things as infertility in women, pelvic inflammatory disease, a greater susceptibility to HIV and serious blood, joint and immune complications.
Japan and Hong Kong have already found cases of a gonorrhea superbug that is resistant to multiple drugs.
Fun.
This got us thinking about how the health insurance reforms Obama finalized included a $250 million budget allocated to abstinence-only programs (over five years). Compare that to the $75 million for comprehensive sex ed programs. We were curious exactly what abstinence-only programs consisted of:
Programs that receive this funding must teach that abstinence from sexual activity is the only certain way to avoid out-of-wedlock pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and other associated health problems and that sex before marriage is likely to have harmful psychological and physical effects. (source: CNN)
We have Syphilis on the rise, Chlamydia rates more than doubling in the last decade, Gonorrhea threatening to become a super bug, HIV infecting millions a year and we still think that abstinence only programs are the way to go? This even after finding no evidence of their effectiveness. What part of history has shown us that education doesn’t work?
This is almost too stupid for words. Now we can add the $250 million to the $15.3 billion cost that STD’s already weigh on the health care system.
We need a drink.
