Porn and religion have had a delicate relationship through the years. Although most religious documents were written thousands of years before pornography ever existed, their interpretation has historically lead scholars to believe it just isn’t kosher. It’s kind of like how lawyers tell us the constitution clearly states the founding fathers wanted the government to read our text messages.

Most people who identify as religious seem to be ok with it, as the region known as the “Bible Belt” in the United States consumes a suspicious amount of porn. Like alcohol or gambling, it’s totally fine in moderation and with an understanding that what happens on Pornhub doesn’t necessarily happen in real life. As long as porno stays in their lane religion is generally ok with it existing.

However when one porn studio decided to film a scene in and around a well-known Catholic church in the Netherlands, they really pissed off a lot of people.

So upset were the Catholics of Tilburg that when they noticed their beloved church in an X-rated movie they immediately put their lotion and tissues away and sought legal action against the film’s makers. After mulling over the situation for some time, a public prosecutor finally came to a decision.

While everyone agreed the scenes filmed in the church were offensive, they weren’t illegal as no sex acts took place on church grounds or in public. As one lawyer pointed out- blasphemy isn’t a crime in Holland and aside from insulting a few Catholics the producers did nothing wrong.

Though local priests were upset at the initial decision, every else more or less agreed with the interpretation of the law and moved on.

The star of the adult film, Dutch performer Kim Holland, took it off of her website after finding out so many people were offended. Soon afterward a special mass was held in the church to cleanse it of any evil pornography residue so normal worship could resume. No harm no foul?

This wasn’t an amateur affair and more than likely the producers knew exactly what kind of publicity such a stunt would create. There will always be something that sets off sensitive prudes; it might as well create some buzz for your product. That’s the Dutch porn business, baby.
